MOR Soft Skills Workshops

The Washington University Office of the CIO (OCIO) is committed to providing professional and leadership development opportunities to facilitate the growth and empowerment of IT staff. The MOR Associates IT Leaders Program is designed to help future IT leaders develop individual leadership capabilities as well as the skills needed to work with colleagues across the enterprise.

As an introduction to the tenets, concepts, language and common goals of the program, the OCIO is offering a series of lunch-time soft skills sessions covering key MOR tenets. These sessions are open to all IT staff at Washington University. Attend one or all sessions, build your communications and leadership skills, network with other university IT professionals, and take away key lessons you can immediately apply to real-world university situations.

Workshop Schedule

The terms introspection and intentionality tend toward philosophy and psychology.  Each of those practices has relevant power in your work and in being a good leader.  Taking a pause to reflect heightens your ability to solve problems, to contribute in meetings, and to “think before you act”.  This session on “I-Time” is about taking a pause, and how setting aside a few minutes throughout your day can make all the difference in productivity, contribution, uncovering solutions, and being present in every situation.

Learning to listen while people share their view of what you could do to enhance your presentation or your effectiveness takes practice. Our tendency is to get defensive and put up a shield to protect ourselves. Learning to divert these old automatic responses to feedback takes a little time. Yet, participants invariably see the benefits to being more open and as a result ask for feedback more often.
